Few place names evoke the kind of beach paradise sensation that Tahiti does. The exotic island nation located deep in the Pacific Ocean boasts tropical clear water, huge, sandy beaches, and the island lifestyle that so many wish to be a part of but so few actually get the chance. As far as surfing goes, Tahiti is an ideal location for all kinds of surfers, but especially those who want to experience the beauty of an untapped beach.

For a small island, Tahiti has a surprising amount people who live there regularly, almost 200,000. As part of French Polynesia, the national languages in Tahiti are French and Tahitian, but because of the major amount of tourism that Tahiti receives, plenty of people have learned English. The large contingent of wealthy tourists who visit Tahiti to indulge in the island paradise, though, also drives up the prices of most services, so make sure that you are prepared to shell out money for services like boat rides to the most pristine surf spots.

Financial preparations and caveats aside, Tahiti has two distinct surf seasons. One lasts from November to March, during what is essentially summertime in Tahiti, and the other lasts from April to October, the Tahitian winter. During the summertime, the northern side of the island has plenty of eight-foot swells, perfect for surfers of all ability levels, but during the wintertime, your best bet would be to head down to the southern part of the island. There, the swells from storms near Australia and New Zealand create ideal surf conditions.

Surfing in Tahiti is wonderful because there is no better way to enjoy the crystal clear tropical water and the excellent weather conditions that promise to have you wanting to be outdoors all day long. The island of Tahiti is covered in premium surf locations, many of them untapped and essentially undiscovered. This adds an element of excitement and wonder to the whole surfing experience.

Because of Tahiti’s location and reputation, things may tend to be a bit on the expensive side, and sometimes just getting out to Tahiti can prove troublesome. Otherwise, Tahiti is the quintessential island paradise and a surfer’s dream.
